It’s often hard to remember all the holidays that happen in a month, especially in understanding what they are, who celebrates them, and how to acknowledge them in an inclusive way. As such, we at Plan to Action have curated a list of a few notable holidays in the upcoming month for your convenience with a brief overview of each. We’ve also included links to other resources if you’d like to learn more about each holiday.
The month of September is…
Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15, 2024 – October 15, 2024). This month is a time to recognize and celebrate the rich tapestry of cultures, histories, and contributions of Hispanic and Latinx communities. This month-long observance honors the vibrant traditions, languages, and achievements of individuals with roots in Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, and South America. The celebration begins on September 15, marking the anniversary of independence for several Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Throughout the month, a variety of events and activities take place, including festivals, cultural performances, educational programs, and community gatherings, all aimed at highlighting the diverse heritage and impactful contributions of Hispanic and Latinx people to society.
Inclusion Tip: Use Accurate and Respectful Terminology. Be mindful of the language you use, and prefer terms that individuals identify with. Terms like "Hispanic," "Chicano," and specific nationalities (e.g., Puerto Rican, Dominican) should be used appropriately.
