Embracing Inclusive Holidays: March

Writer: PTA TeamPTA Team

It is often hard to remember all the holidays that happen in a month, especially in understanding what they are, who celebrates them, and how to acknowledge them in an inclusive way. As such, we at Plan to Action have curated a list of a few notable holidays in the upcoming month for your convenience with a brief overview of each. We have also included links to other resources if you would like to learn more about each holiday.

The month of March is…

  • Women’s History Month (March 2025), which celebrates and honors the contributions and achievements of women throughout US history. This month highlights the often overlooked and undervalued roles women have played in shaping the world and provides an opportunity to reflect on how far gender equality has come, and how much farther it needs to go.

    • Inclusion Tip: Share the history and contributions of women in various fields, or of women who have been pioneers in their respective fields.

  • Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month (March 2025), which is dedicated to raising awareness about developmental disabilities and promoting inclusion around individuals with developmental disabilities.

    • Inclusion Tip: Take time to learn about developmental disabilities, their impact on individuals and families, and ways to support inclusive communities (e.g., donate or volunteer with organizations, advocate for accessibility, etc.)

Within the month of March…

  • Ramadan (March 2 – 31, 2025) is a holy time for Muslims, often observed by fasting, prayer, reflection, and community. Ramadan is a time of spiritual growth, self-control, and reflection, and encourages acts of charity and seeking forgiveness for mistakes.

    • Inclusion Tip: Recognize that Ramadan is not only about fasting, but also for prayer, reflection, and spiritual growth. If possible, offer employees who are fasting additional flexibility to take breaks when time for prayers, or to break fast.

  • Holi (March 12, 2025), often known as the Festival of Colors, is a festival that marks the arrival of spring. Holi is often celebrated by throwing brightly colored powders (called gulal) at each other, creating a colorful atmosphere.

    • Inclusion Tip: Highlight how different regions and cultures celebrate Holi. For example, the festival might include regional foods, music, or dance styles that can make the celebration more inclusive and representative of the diversity within the community.

  • Transgender Day of Visibility (March 31, 2025) is a day dedicated to honoring the transgender community, highlighting the visibility of transgender individuals, and raising awareness of the challenges they face. It’s a time to educate others, advocate for transgender rights, and ensure that transgender voices are heard and recognized.

    • Inclusion Tip: Actively amplify transgender voices and stories by sharing experiences of transgender individuals, advocating for transgender rights, and using correct names and pronouns for transgender individuals.
