Embracing Inclusive Holidays: February

Writer's picture: PTA TeamPTA Team

It is often hard to remember all the holidays that happen in a month, especially in understanding what they are, who celebrates them, and how to acknowledge them in an inclusive way. As such, we at Plan to Action have curated a list of a few notable holidays in the upcoming month for your convenience with a brief overview of each. We have also included links to other resources if you would like to learn more about each holiday.

The month of February is…

  • Black History Month (February 2025), which celebrates and honors the contributions, achievements, and history of African Americans throughout US history. It is a time to reflect on the impact of Black Americans on our culture, politics, and society.

    • Inclusion Tip: Consider hosting educational events that highlight the history, achievements and contributions of Black individuals in various fields. Ensure that these events are inclusive and feature a range of voices and experiences.

Within the month of February…

  • National Freedom Day (February 1, 2025) marks the signing of the 13th Amendment, which abolished slavery in the United States. It is a day to reflect on freedom, equality, and human rights.

    • Inclusion Tip: Invite speakers who can share insights into the history of civil rights movements, the impact of systemic oppression, and the importance of freedom in the context of contemporary social issues.

  • Presidents’ Day (February 17, 2025) is a day that honors the US Presidents, specifically George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. It is a day to reflect on leadership, governance, and the ongoing struggle for justice and equality in American history. This day is used to reflect on leadership of figures like Abraham Lincoln who advocated for the abolition of slavery, and the ways in which presidential legacies have shaped racial and social justice movements.

    • Inclusion Tip: Host a discussion or activity that explores how U.S. presidents (and historical figures) have shaped the nation’s values of freedom, democracy, and equality – and how these ideals have evolved over time.
