Embracing Inclusive Holidays: October

It’s often hard to remember all the holidays that happen in a month, especially in understanding what they are, who celebrates them, and how to acknowledge them in an inclusive way. As such, we at Plan to Action have curated a list of a few notable holidays in the upcoming month for your convenience with a brief overview of each. We’ve also included links to other resources if you’d like to learn more about each holiday.

Within the month of October…

  • Indigenous People’s Day (October 9, 2024) observed on the second Monday of October, is a day that honors and recognizes the history, culture, and contributions of Indigenous communities. This holiday is dedicated to awareness and ongoing struggles for rights, sovereignty, and recognition faced by Indigenous populations.

    • Inclusion Tip: Take the time to learn about Indigenous histories, cultures, and contemporary issues and share this knowledge with friends and family.

  • World Mental Health Day (October 10, 2024). This day is a global initiative aimed at raising awareness about mental health issues and promoting and mental well-being. Established by the World Federation for Mental Health in 1992, the day focuses on encouraging open conversations about mental health, reducing stigma, and advocating for better access to mental health care.

    • Inclusion Tip: Create platforms for open dialogue where people from different backgrounds can discuss their experiences and perspectives on mental health.

  • National Coming Out Day (October 11, 2024) is a day dedicated to celebrating and supporting the LGBTQIA+ community’s right to come out and live authentically. Established in 1988, this day encourages individuals to share their sexual orientation or gender identity with friends, family, and the world, to foster acceptance and understanding.

    • Inclusion Tip: Learn about LGBTQIA+ issues and the coming out process. Create a welcoming atmosphere where people feel safe to express their identities and use inclusive language.

  • International Pronouns Day (October 19, 2024) is celebrated on the third Wednesday of October to raise awareness about the importance of using correct pronouns and respecting individuals’ gender identities. This day seeks to reduce stigma and misunderstanding surrounding gender diversity and emphasizes the significance of using pronouns aligned with individuals’ identities.

    • Inclusion Tip: Commit to using your pronouns when you introduce yourself to set a positive example and encourage others to do the same.

Diwali sparklers up close

  • Diwali (October 31, 2024 – November 4, 2024) is the most significant and widely celebrated festivals in Hinduism, Jainism, and Sikhism. The date falls in October or November, depending on the lunar calendar and symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. The festival spans five days with each day having its own rituals and significance. People decorate their homes with oil lamps, colorful designs, and vibrant decorations. Fireworks light up the night sky and families gather to share festive meals and sweets.

    • Inclusion Tip: Create opportunities for people to share their own Diwali experiences or memories, fostering a sense of community.
